CURRICULUM OF THE WEEK: JUNE 1

Competition Class Focus: Passing the X-Guard
Available for all students focused on tournament prep or sharpening their passing game.
This month’s comp class is centered around how to neutralize and pass the X-guard — one of the trickiest open guard positions in modern Jiu-Jitsu.
Fundamentals Program
Schedule: Monday, Tuesday, Friday
This week’s theme is Half Guard Attacks. These techniques are essential for newer students and a great refresher for everyone else.
Techniques of the Week:
- Taking the Back from Half Guard – Learn to secure the underhook, climb to the back, and establish control.
- Sweep from Half Guard (Takedown Style) – Simple and effective half guard tackle for top control.
- Single Leg When Opponent Stands Up – Transitioning from half guard to wrestling-based takedown.
- Half Guard Roll-Under Sweep – Use their pressure against them to reverse the position.
Drill of the Week:
Combine all four techniques in a sequence-based drill. Let students flow through the options, learning how to chain their attacks together.
Teaching Tip:
Break each technique into 3–4 clear checkpoints. Focus on helping white belts understand position before speed.
Advanced Classes – Instructor’s Choice
Schedule: Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday
This is your space to bring the fire! January’s suggested theme is Entering and Attacking from X-Guard.
Suggested Techniques:
- Grips & Entries into X-Guard from seated guard, De La Riva, and shin-to-shin.
- X-Guard Sweeps – basic and advanced options, including technical stand-up, far leg sweep, and transition to the back.
🧠 Encourage creative problem-solving and positional sparring. Challenge students to find entries during rolling.
Specific Training Focus
Open guard scenarios with live resistance
- Bottom Player Goal: Sweep or submit.
- Top Player Goal: Pass the guard.
Rotate partners every 2 minutes. Emphasize using what was learned in fundamentals and advanced classes. Keep the energy high and feedback flowing.
Final Notes for Instructors:
- Encourage students to take notes after class to reinforce retention.
- Be mindful of different levels on the mat – adjust pace and explanation as needed.
- Create a positive class atmosphere with encouragement, clarity, and focus.
- Use your creativity and experience to add situations or variations that match your group’s needs.
Thank you for your dedication to excellence on and off the mats!
